The 70’s

It was a simple concept- with great potential. Believing that opportunities came from knocking on doors until they open- On January 1, 1971 a small company was formed by an individual keen to grow and build up an organization to reckon with.

Mr. V.M.Trehan set up Mekaster as a marketing organization representing one principal in the engineering sector. He adopted the direct sales approach to the actual user where the product was taken directly to the customer, by demonstrating its features and benefits to them, interest was generated which led to subsequent sale. Aggressive marketing by a small and dedicated team led to increased business from all over the country and by the end of 70’s his company Mekaster represented more than 100 leading companies of the world exclusively in India for sales and service of their products, servicing the needs of customers in the country .

Mr. Trehan introduced the concept of Tool Kits, Torque Wrenches and Industrial Tools for heavy duty applications in the core sector of economy , of the country like Mining, Power, Automobiles, Oil & Gas , Aviation , Infrastructure and Manufacturing. He kept close watch on the development of the country and the Telecommunication sector which needed new age technology for growth and modernization and entered into the Telecommunication sector in 1971.

The 80’s

The 80’s saw Mr. Trehan very optimistic and on the move. He had a very clear goal in front of him- Expansion.

His greatest contribution was in bringing the Digital Switching Technology from France for which he worked persistently for more than eleven years. Alcatel France E-10B Digital Exchange Systems were selected by Govt. of India paving the way for modernization of the sector in the country. Technology was transferred for manufacture of the systems in India as well .This technology brought about a Telecom Revolution and laid the foundation for economic development in the country.

In 1987 , he felt the need to spread the knowledge of the people in the country in the field of Telecommunication and Information Technology. He took the initiative and promoted publication of Telematics India, a premier magazine focused on this sector. Under the banner of Telematics India a large number of world class seminars and exhibitions were organized at Bangalore , Delhi and Mumbai to supplement the cause of spread of technology and services in the country.

Keen to provide a broad based platform for deliberations on the subject of telecommunications and to have an interface of Technology providers, Policy makers, Technology developers, opinion leaders in academia and Industry, Mr. Trehan was instrumental in setting up National Telematics Forum (NTF) in 1988. He is the Founder Member and Vice President of the Forum. The Forum was established with a view to propagate the cause of Communication. NTF organized a series of seminars and workshops which focused on deliberations in Technology, Services and Telecom policy makers, these were the forerunner to the path breaking announcement and adoption of National Telecom Policy 1994, which paved the way for launching Mobile Telephony. The rapid introduction of these services have contributed to the growth of Telecom sector and the economy of the country at large.

He has always felt that Engineering technology and services provide the product for use in core sectors of the economy. Responding to the rapid growth of economy , he focused on the Infrastructure and Construction sector and sourced technology for a number of key products.

He introduced Concrete Paving Equipment to concrete the Canal Linings to ensure the conservation of water up to 30% or more, which would previously either be sapped by the earthen Canals or get evaporated. The manufacturing unit was set up at Halol, Gujarat which also started the manufacture of Rack and Pinion Lifts for construction of High Rise Buildings.

The 90’s

The 90’s saw the Indian economy booming and the marketing environment changing.

Mr. Trehan during this period consolidated his business and the four strategic business units that emerged were Engineering, Telecommunications, Global Trade and Services.

New products, new agencies were added in Global Trade and his organization witnessed unprecedented growth.

In 1992, his manufacturing unit at Halol started the manufacture of Safety Relief Valves used in the petrochemical industry.

The company under his dynamic leadership continued to grow in new business areas offering state of the art product range vital for the economic growth of the country.

This Decade

With leadership position in industrial tools, construction equipment and international trade and based on the strengths gained over the years Mr. Trehan has continued with his quest for newer technology.

The latest addition of Membrane Technology to ensure the conservation for storage of Petroleum Products thus not only saving money but also helping environment and safety.

He has introduced the State of the Art Instruments to undertake Mapping of Utilities for Underground and Micronization Survey for Assessment of impact on infrastructure, to provide vital inputs for development of large cities in the country.

Under his dynamic leadership, Mekaster has become the first corporate member of NAM S&T centre for promoting science & technology.
