The Telecom Icon
Mr. Trehan has been associated with the Telecom Industry for more than 30 years. During this period, he has made significant contributions which have made him a Telecom Icon internationally.
- Mr. Trehan put his best efforts to ensure the most efficient communication facilities throughout the country. Eventually in 1982, it was Mr. Trehan, who was responsible in bringing the latest technology – Digital Switching System to India. The ushering of the Digital Switching in India was an important phase of Indian Telecommunications and has opened the doors for development in the field of Telecommunications. He ensured that the latest technology is absorbed in our system in a record time.
- The Telecom Infrastructure has proved to be foundation for the overall economic growth in India.
- In 1987, Mr. Trehan took an initiative in promoting the publication of Telematics India, a premier Magazine in field of Telecommunications and Information Technology. Under the aegis of Telematics India, several world class seminars were organized at Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai.
- Keen to provide a broad based platform for deliberations on the subject of telecommunications, Mr. Trehan was instrumental in setting up National Telematics Forum (NTF). He is the Founder Member and Vice President of the Forum. The Forum was established with a view to propagate the cause of Communication.
- Personally conducted / presided over more than 180 Seminars and Workshops in major cities of the country, under the aegis of NTF, Telematics India, INFOTEK and IETE. Provided total financial support for organizing the above activities.
- Took up the cause of the Telecom Employees for their training in the latest technologies, right down to the lineman level.
- Involved the trade union leaders, representing 4,00,000 Telecom Employees, for the first time in the Country, in various Seminars and Workshops projecting them as part of the Management so that they also accept- challenges of the change.
- An indefatigable Campaigner for Telecom liberalization advocated the importance of formation of TRAI ahead of privatization and the regulatory role to be played by it ensuring level playing field.
- Played an important role in formulating National Telecom Policy.
- Mr. Trehan was involved with DOT continuously from 1971 till 1996-97 and rendered technical and policy determination support to Hon’ble Ministers.
- Led a delegation under the aegis of NTF and presented a paper comprising recommendations for integration of Telecommunication and Information to Shri Sharad Pawar,Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
- In 1990, the then Vice President of India, Late Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma, dedicated “Mekaster” Auditorium to the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers (IETE), in Hyderabad which was donated by Mr Trehan.
- Mr. Trehan’s sincere efforts resulted in the prestigious Marconi International Fellowship Award ceremony being held for the first and only time, in India in 1997.
- NTF also acted as a Catalyst in exposing World Telecom personalities to India like ITU Secretary General, Chief of Eutelsat, Marconi Award winners, Noble Prize winners and top Executives of several communication companies etc.
