The Social Scientist

Being a Social Scientist, the welfare of the Society always ranked at the top of his priorities. To promote the spirit of fraternity, amity, peace and harmony throughout the world, Mr. Trehan founded a non-political, non-partisan and non-governmental organization – Foundation for Amity & National Solidarity in December 1984 in the aftermath of assassination of Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India.

The objective of FANS – as the Foundation soon came to be known- was to promote awareness of the concept of amity and friendship amongst all Indians. This has been successfully achieved through mass contact programmes such as youth camps, publication of periodicals, distribution of literature, peace marches, workshops, seminars, corner meets, etc. all over the country. More than 400 functions across the country, over a span of 24 years’ have been organized by the FANS.

Annual Inter-University Youth Camps organized by the FANS play an important role for interaction among more than 250 participants representing various Universities from different parts of the country. Mr. Trehan makes it a point to be with the participants during the duration of the Camp and interacts with them on regular basis. He feels, that most of our problems, can be resolved if the Youth of our Country can imbibe the spirit of viewing themselves as Indians first and last. Besides, FANS has organized several camps for School Children on this subject in different places.

FANS also produced a TV serial on National Integration ‘Yeh Gulistan Hamara’. Seeing its popularity, it was broadcast twice by Doordarshan.

On completion of a decade in the service of humanity, FANS instituted an Annual National Amity Award to be given to an individual/organization for exceptional contribution to the cause of Amity and National Solidarity. Each award carries a token sum of Rs.1.0 Lac and a Citation. The First Awardee was Late Shri Nani A. Palkhivala. The award was given by His Excellency K .R. Narayanan, Vice President of India, at a Function held on 23. 12. 1994 at Parliament House Annexe. The other awardees include Maulana Wahiduddin Khan, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Late Jathedar Jiwan Singh Umrangal and late Ms.Nirmala Deshpande. Each year, the award was given by the then Prime Minister of India.

The last award was given to Shri Khuswant Singh by Shri Som Nath Chatterjee, Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha, at a function held at Parliament House Annexe on 26.09.2008.

FANS also established Archana Punaravas Kendra at Guwahati, Assam, with the aim of providing succor to physically challenged people. Apart from providing the artificial limbs to the needy, they are also given Vocational Training as per their aptitude to help them become useful members of the society.

He has always felt that Engineering technology and services provide the product for use in core sectors of the economy. Responding to the rapid growth of economy , he focused on the Infrastructure and Construction sector and sourced technology for a number of key products.

Mindful of the impact of education on self development and inculcation of Scientific Temper, FANS Scholarship Scheme was launched to help the under-privileged children to continue with their studies. Scholarships are granted in kind and not in cash. All requirements of the children related to education are met. So far, FANS have distributed over 500 scholarships across the States like Maharshtra, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, U.P. etc. This scheme has helped the needy to face the future with confidence.

Mr. Trehan is the National President of social organization – All India Satsang Mandal. Under his stewardship, the organization has conducted more than thousand functions. All India Satsang Mandal focuses on propagation of value system amongst the people and in particular the Youth. Character building is one of its main objectives. Spreading religion with spirituality is the corner stone of its activity. All India Satsang Mandal is also helping the needy patients admitted in various hospitals with free medicines and meals.

Virendar Mohan Trehan being conscientious Social Scientist felt disturbed at the pathetic living conditions of Rural India. One should not forget the fact that 65% of our population still lives in villages. Mahatama Gandhi very wisely advocated that village be considered as a basic unit of administration. We have enacted Panchayati Raj Act but its implementation is far from satisfactory. Mr. Trehan traveled extensively throughout the country and had series of meetings with elected representatives of various Panchayats . It hurt his sensitivity to see the gross negligence of the villages by the administration. This gave him an impetus to form an NGO named Hindustani Panchayat Sangathan (HPS) to work for the welfare of the villages. He launched HPS primarily to galvanize the Panchayats to undertake Developmental Projects in their areas. He advocated that we should revert back to the tradition of Evolved Local Governance. Panchayats also play a crucial role in maintaining Peace and Harmony in their respective areas. Mr. Trehan has ploughed his own resources in conducting hundreds of functions under the aegis of HPS. A number of projects, beneficial to the local population, were successfully executed under his guidance. HPS will continue to serve the villages and through them the Nation.
